Lone Cypress Blue

The Lone Cypress from below and up close, the white granite rock face filling most of the canvas, the tree perched up top looking considerably more precarious from this angle than it does from the road. The rock itself earns as much attention as the tree here, all those faceted planes of white and warm grey catching the light differently depending on where you look, the watercolor handling the surface with real confidence without overworking it. The bay sits calm and wide behind it all, a few rocks breaking the surface, the far shore dissolving into haze. The palette is warm and sun-bleached, creamy whites and sandy tans in the rock face, clear blue in the water, a strip of golden coastal scrub along the bottom edge. The matte canvas finish suits the bright, open quality of the scene perfectly.
