Description

The square opens up with the church tower on the right, a market stall in the middle, trees filling in the space between the buildings, and the Velebit mountains sitting grey and distant behind everything. A few people, a warm afternoon, the kind of scene that has been repeating itself in this square for generations without needing to change. The watercolor palette is soft and hazy, dusty pinks and warm greens and that particular Adriatic light that washes everything in a gentle, slightly bleached warmth by mid-afternoon. The brushwork is loose and affectionate, the architecture just suggested rather than documented, the trees doing most of the compositional work.
