Looking out past the old cannery buildings toward a beach that is clearly having a busier afternoon than the street behind it, umbrellas and figures dotting the sand in small dabs of color, the ocean running blue beyond them, the coastline curving away into the haze. The building on the right takes up a good portion of the frame, its ornate arched window and textured facade doing the architectural heavy lifting while the wide open sky and beach to the left keep the whole composition from feeling crowded. It's an unusual angle on a well-known stretch of coast, more interested in the relationship between the built environment and the beach than in either one alone. The watercolor palette is deliberately restrained, cool greys in the building, a pale sky, and then those small warm pops of color from the beachgoers that pull the eye right where they should.
