Three cross-country skiers moving through a pine forest, the snow going blue and lavender in the shadows between the trees, warm light coming through from somewhere behind the stand of firs and catching the snow in patches of gold and white. Bear Valley on a good winter day, quiet enough to hear your own skis, the trees big and unhurried around you. The watercolor palette handles winter light better than you might expect, the cool purples and blues in the snow shadows balanced against the warm browns of the pine trunks and the pale gold where the sun breaks through. The figures are small and relaxed, three people in no particular hurry, which is the right pace for a place like this. The brushwork is loose and confident throughout, the trees built up in layered washes that give them real depth and presence. The matte canvas finish suits the cool, wintry palette perfectly. Gallery-stretched on a slim 1.25" pine frame and ready to hang out of the box, it's for anyone who has skied through a Sierra forest on a clear winter morning and found it to be one of the better ways to spend a day.
