Lahaina Boats

The boats are moored up close and the palms rise tall behind them, the West Maui Mountains filling the upper half of the canvas in deep greens and blue-grey with big clouds building above the ridgeline. It's the inner harbor from water level, the kind of view you get from the deck of another boat, everything a little closer and more immediate than the postcard shot from shore. This is an oil painting and the color is doing serious work, the turquoise and teal of the harbor water rendered in thick, reflective strokes, the deep tropical greens of the vegetation behind, the whole scene vibrating with that particular Maui light that makes everything look slightly more saturated than you remember it being. The brushwork is loose and confident throughout, the boats solid and present, the reflections in the water alive. The matte canvas finish keeps all that color grounded without dulling it.
