Alpine Inn

The Alpine Inn, formerly Rossotti's, has been on this corner of Portola Valley long enough that the sign still feels the need to explain itself. Out front there are two horses tied up, a road bike leaned against the wall, and a motorcycle parked to the left, which is a pretty accurate summary of the clientele on any given afternoon. This watercolor canvas print gets the building exactly right, the weathered clapboard siding, the hand-painted sign, the big trees behind it holding their green against a warm sandy sky. It's one of the oldest bars in California and it looks it, comfortably and without apology. The brushwork is steady and affectionate, the kind you get when the subject has genuinely earned it.
