Description

Rooftops first, the way it always is in the old Adriatic towns, terracotta tiles stepping down toward the water with chimneys rising between them, and then beyond all of that the harbor, pale and still, a sailboat or two sitting out on it doing nothing in particular. Vrbnik from above, which is the only way to see a village that has been stacking itself up a limestone cliff since the medieval period. The watercolor palette is rich and warm, deep burnt oranges in the roof tiles, dark forest greens in the trees pushing in from both sides, that particular shade of blue-grey water that the Kvarner Gulf does on a calm afternoon. The brushwork has real confidence to it, the tile pattern rendered with enough detail to read clearly without being fussed over. The matte canvas finish suits the earthy, sun-baked palette perfectly. Gallery-stretched on a slim 1.25" pine frame and ready to hang out of the box, it's for anyone with a connection to Krk island, or anyone who has ever looked out over an Adriatic rooftop and felt that the world had briefly arranged itself very well indeed.
