Split Black & White

Description

The same city, a completely different feeling. This etching-style rendering of Split strips away all the Mediterranean color and replaces it with something older and more architectural, dense crosshatching, deep shadows, the rooftops and spires and harbor reflections rendered in fine ink-like strokes that give the whole cityscape a historical weight the watercolor version doesn't carry. The cathedral spire is still there above the roofline, the palm fronds still pushing in from the left, but everything feels more serious here, more document than impression. It's the kind of image that looks like it belongs in a 19th century travel journal, which is a compliment. The canvas texture works particularly well with this treatment, giving the fine linework a slightly roughened, printed quality that suits the subject.
