Description

The rock just sits there in the surf the way it has for longer than anyone can usefully imagine, a handful of birds perched on top, the waves breaking white around its base, wildflowers along the near bank doing their small colorful thing. This is the Santa Cruz coastline at its most straightforward and most beautiful, which are, out here, usually the same thing. The watercolor treatment is clean and graphic, flat washes of teal and white and pale green that give the whole scene a crisp, almost printlike quality without losing the looseness that makes it feel alive. The surf is rendered in long soft whites that really do look like moving water, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. The matte canvas finish suits the cool, breezy palette perfectly.
