Description

A figure leading a donkey through a stone village, haystacks stacked between the buildings, dry-stone walls running along both sides, the houses simple and square behind it all. This is the Dalmatian hinterland, inland Croatia or one of the karst islands stripped of its summer tourism, looking exactly as it has for generations. The watercolor palette is earthy and cool, grey limestone walls, warm browns in the hay, white-painted houses catching whatever light is going, the whole scene painted with a straightforward honesty that suits the subject completely. It's a working landscape with no interest in being picturesque about it, which ends up making it more interesting than a prettier scene would be. The brushwork is solid and unfussy throughout.
