Boats Under Pier

A weathered green boat pulled up on the shore under the pier, the pilings framing the right side of the canvas, and beyond it all the lake opening wide with a sailboat out on the water and the Sierra Nevada sitting blue and massive across the horizon. The boat in the foreground is old and well used, the name just legible on the hull, sitting on sand that shifts between teal and gold depending on where the light hits the shallow water. The whole composition works beautifully, the close dark foreground giving way to the bright, open expanse of the lake and mountains behind it. The watercolor palette is cool and varied, greens and blues in the water, warm sandy tones in the shore, the mountains pale and distant. The matte canvas finish handles the layered washes of the lake surface and sky with real elegance.
